Tribeca Townhouse New York City
This Federal-style townhouse, once located in the historical Washington Street Market, was given individual landmark status as part of the Washington Street Urban Renewal Plan during the 1970s. One of nine houses, the historical significance of these houses is inextricably tied to the development of the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission. Having fallen into a state of disrepair, YUN was brought in to carefully restore the exterior of the house and reenvision the interior into a highly crafted, contemporary dwelling.
Outside, YUN upgraded the windows, the dormers, front door wood enframement, and the rear yard porch, returning the structure to its former glory. The main stair was moved to the center of the house, creating a gracious ascent from the open living room and kitchen at parlor level to bedrooms on the upper levels.
Throughout the interior, floors were refinished with wide, salvaged pine floor boards, custom-designed millwork, and moldings and trim were added throughout. The 4 fireplaces were reactivated and clad with limestone mantles or custom tilework designed by the owner. The cellar was transformed into an art studio and exhibition space for the owners, both accomplished artists.
