Prospect Heights Townhouse Brooklyn, NY
Since its construction in 1910, this Brooklyn brick row house was stripped of most of its original detail after years of unsophisticated renovations. YUN was brought in to restore, uncover and bring back to life certain original elements throughout the interior of the home, while creating an updated, contemporary feel throughout.
Through a careful research initiative, the architectural team developed a strategy to selectively integrate the home’s design history into the newly updated residence. These nods to the home’s past were sensitively combined with materials sourced from Brooklyn salvage yards, such as the black and gold fireplace mantel, stair balusters and window shutters. YUN’s scope included both aesthetic and invisible improvements, including structurally reinforcing the floors, super insulating the house, and upgrading the mechanicals. New finishes were added such as white oak herringbone-pattern flooring and new cabinetry throughout.
Another key component to the renovation was to create opportunities for natural light to flow more organically throughout the house. The parlor floor was opened and uncluttered, clerestory interior windows were inserted, and new skylights added to lighten up the interior.
